frequently asked questions
WHAT IS A CUSTOM EAR MOLD?
A custom ear mold is a laboratory-made earpiece made from impressions of your ears. In North America, the experienced impression takers usually are audiologists. Most often, these are made of acrylic or soft silicone that can fit the ear and the ear canal tightly. The advantage of the softer earplugs is they change shape slightly as the wearer’s ear canal changes shape when talking or chewing, thereby continuing to seal during those activities.
For hearing protection, it is important that earmolds can completely occlude (seal) your ear. If air is able to pass by the earmold by any gap, the hearing protection loses its function. For optimum protection and comfort, quality earmold impressions are crucial.
WILL CUSTOM EAR MOLDS WORK WITH THE HEARING AIDS I ALREADY OWN?
Dr. Sturdivant can order appropriate earmolds for your current hearing aids through OtoPro; but the products we custom order for hearing protection usually cannot be used for both purposes. There are a variety of reasons for this, for example, earmolds for hearing aids are typically vented for air flow and have tubing connected to attach to your hearing aid.
I HAVE A HEARING LOSS. CAN THESE DEVICES BE USED AS HEARING AIDS?
These devices are intended to be used as hearing protection and enhancement devices. Depending on which model you choose, they can offer a significant level of amplification. Unlike hearing aids, they are not programmable to an individual's specific hearing loss and it is not recommended that they be used as a substitute for a hearing aid.
